Here are some basic instructions to transfer your website over to GearHost. This is an outline that will help get you started in the right direction. Each website can be different so these instructions vary from site to site.
1. Download your content and make a backup of your database.
You'll need to do this with the old web host. Use FTP to login and download a copy of your website content files. Along with the content for your website you will need the database as well. For MySQL this will be a .sql file and MSSQL a .bak file. Ask your old host how to get a backup of your database.
2. Upload the content to GearHost.
- Make sure you have a FTP user created.
- Use FTP to upload the content. You can find instructions here.
3. Restore you database.
- MySQL, follow these instructions.
- MSSQL, follow these instructions.
4. Edit you connection string.
You will need to find the configuration file that contains your connection string. Usually your web.config file for asp.net applications or wp-config for Wordpress. Change the database information to point to the correct server and use the right user name and password. This will change from the new host so it needs to be updated.
5. Test your website.
You can test your website by using the test URL provided with your account.
6. Move email.
If you have email with your old host you will want to move that over. You can use an email client like Outlook to backup or transfer your email. Either by pop3 or imap. If you use IMAP you can actually connect both accounts at the same time and drag and drop the email.
7. Change DNS.
The last step you take is to change DNS for your domain name so it points to GearHost. Either change the name servers so they use GearHost's, or edit your A and CNAME records in your existing DNS to point to your CloudSite IP address.
